Within this Character Concept Design, I looked deeper into the "Ravagers", who feature in Marvel's "Guardians Of The Galaxy" and Davy Jones' "Forsaken" crew from Disney's "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest".
To add some background context, I developed a brief literature on how this persona lost his right (dominant) arm in combat. This strongly influenced my exploration of what weapon he would use during the development phase. I wanted to maintain visual harmony and cohesion between the weaponry, and costume, and how this would be informed by his personality. I therefore went for a large greatsword which he would have painfully gone through hours of training to spite himself for losing his limb. A trial to help him overcome his loss, and enrich his proficiency in combat to demonstrate both his physical and mental strength.
I imagined the character as a grizzled veteran, but the biggest challenge was striking the balance between how amphibious/reptilian/aquatic I would make him visually. I settled on a more bipedal form, with a variety of marine features such as Squids, Catfish, and Sharks. I respectfully considered the sensitivity around Mauri culture in regards to his markings somewhat resembling Ta Moko. I selected a blue color scheme for his flesh tones to best camouflage him in aquatic environments.
I even considered if this character would require a breathing apparatus to aid him on his various space quests outside his oceanic homeworld. I regressed this choice to better fit his garments which can be attributed to that of ancient Greek culture, whilst retaining a classic archetypal pirate quality. This included fleshing out this personality with various keepsakes and sentimental treasures obtained over his lifetime hanging from his belt.
